CMS Acting Administrator Leslie Norwalk is expected to leave the agency on July 20, two days after the Senate Finance Committee takes up the nomination of President Bushs pick for the job, longtime HHS veteran Kerry Weems. In an e-mail to staff sent last night, Norwalk called her tenure at the CMS an incredibly challenging, enriching and rewarding experience.
Norwalk, who has been with the agency for about six years, has served in the top spot since Oct. 15, 2006, when she took over after Mark McClellan left that post for the private sector. In her tenure at the CMS, Norwalk has served as deputy administrator, chief operating officer and acting director of the Center for Beneficiary Choices. She played a key role in the CMS rollout of the Medicare prescription drug benefit. -- by Matthew DoBias
