Ascension Health, St. Louis, acquired three-hospital Eastern Health System, Birmingham, Ala. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Eastern Health signed a management agreement with St. Vincents in December 2005 and began to consolidate some departments, operations and management, said Liz Moore, a St. Vincents spokeswoman, in an e-mail. Moore said Eastern Health sought the merger to bolster the struggling systems finances and improve care by consolidating its operations with St. Vincent. -- by Melanie Evans
