John Maher, president and chief executive officer of St. Vincents HealthCare, Jacksonville, Fla., announced his retirement effective July 1. Scott Whalen, 54, executive vice president and chief operating officer of two-hospital St. Vincents, will act as interim president and CEO during the search for Mahers successor, the health system said in a news release. Maher, 57, will stay on as senior adviser for nine months as St. Vincent takes over operation of 289-bed St. Lukes Hospital, also in Jacksonville, which it purchased in June 2006 from the Mayo Clinic. In a news release, Maher said he will likely teach and consult after stepping down as CEO of the Ascension Health-owned system. I am ready for a new chapter in my life, he said. This is the right time to make this move. -- by Melanie Evans
