In response to Matthew DoBias' "Verizon implements EHR system for employees":
This article's title is misleading. In the industry, EHR is reserved for electronic health record, which is a provider originated and maintained record that is electronic. That is, it replaces the provider's old-fashioned paper record or chart.
What Verizon is providing is the PHR or personal health record in an electronic medium. That's a very different thing from the EHR. Moreover, it does not replace the EHR. At best, the PHR may reduce the time the patient spends in completing the multipage personal history required of each initial provider visit.
I certainly applaud Verizon for its initiative in promoting a personal health record for its employees and their families and for offering its information technology capabilities and functionality to bring such PHRs to its employees in an electronic medium. Would that all employers would jump on that band wagon!
