The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston named David Callender, M.D., a head and neck surgeon, as its new president. Callender, 49, is currently associate vice chancellor and chief executive officer of the UCLA Hospital System, Los Angeles. He is also an adjunct professor of surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Previously, he was executive vice president and COO at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston. Callender will replace John Stobo, M.D., who announced last year that he would step down in August after 10 years leading the medical school. Callender is slated to start his new job July 1.
