Prices for hospital services climbed 0.7% for the second consecutive month in May, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics seasonally adjusted Consumer Price Index. For the 12 months ended in May, the hospital CPI was up 6.0%.
The physician CPI rose 0.1% in May after remaining unchanged for two consecutive months. For the 12-month period, the physician CPI rose 3.6%. On a seasonally adjusted basis, the CPI advanced 0.7% in May, following a 0.4% rise in April. Curry rejoins HMA as COO
Health Management Associates, Naples, Fla., named Kelly Curry as the companys executive vice president and chief operating officer, effective July 1.
As COO, Curry replaces Burke Whitman, who was promoted to chief executive officer earlier this month and is also the president of the company.
Curry, 52, worked for HMA from 1982 to 1994 and has 17 years in total in hospital management positions. He was HMAs chief financial officer from 1987 to 1994.
When he left the company the first time, Curry became a religious missionary. In 1996, he and his wife started Foundation In Christ Ministries, which operates in Ireland. Curry has served as chairman and president of the organization since its founding, but has turned over management of the foundation to others in order to rejoin HMA.
After it completes the pending sale of two hospitals, HMA will operate 59 hospitals in 15 states. -- by Vince Galloro
