Health Management Associates, Naples, Fla., has agreed to sell 133-bed
Mountain View Regional Medical Center, Norton, Va., and 52-bed Lee
Regional Medical Center, Pennington Gap, Va., to Wellmont Health System,
Kingsport, Tenn., HMA and Wellmont said. Terms were not disclosed. The
deal is expected to close by Aug. 1, pending regulatory approval.
For investor-owned HMA, the sale would pull the company out of the state
of Virginia entirely. If the deal is completed, HMA will operate 59
hospitals in 15 states.
For not-for-profit Wellmont, the deal is the third expansion that the
system has announced within the past two months. In April, Wellmont said
it agreed to a joint venture with HealthSouth Corp., Birmingham, Ala., to
operate 50-bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Kingsport and develop a new
rehabilitation hospital in Bristol, Va. Last month, 25-bed Jenkins (Ky.)
Community Hospital agreed to join the system. If all pending deals close, Wellmont will operate 12 hospitals in three states. -- by href="mailto:[email protected]">Vince Galloro
