Health Management Associates, Naples, Fla., said it will promote Burke Whitman from chief operating officer to chief executive officer effective June 1. Whitman, 51, joined HMA as president and COO in January 2006; he will retain the title of president. Before that, he was executive vice president and chief financial officer of Triad Hospitals, Plano, Texas.
He joined Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp., Nashville, in February 1999 as CFO of its Pacific group in anticipation of Columbia/HCA spinning off Triad in May of that year. Prior to that position, Whitman was president and CFO of Deerfield Healthcare Corp. He also has worked for Almost Family, a home healthcare company, and Morgan Stanley & Co.
Whitman replaces Joseph Vumbacco, who has been CEO of HMA for the past six years. Vumbacco, 61, will retain his title as vice chairman and will work on construction projects, legal issues and federal and state governmental relations. -- by Vince Galloro
