When it comes to prescription drugs, the price for a single pill can be eye-popping.
Tom Kellenberger and Ralph Kalies want to change that. Their BidRx Web site allows patients to shop for the best deals on their prescription drugs, a marketplace many people say they did not know existed.
"The biggest problem with healthcare today is that it doesn't function as a real marketplace," said Kellenberger, vice president of sales and marketing for the small Oshkosh, Wis., company.
"Consumers are sheltered from the real cost. They can't find out what options are available to them or who's providing those options to them," he said. "If we want to buy a car, we don't just put a blindfold on and go to a dealership. That's not the way it works. Unfortunately that's the way the healthcare process works at this time."
After receiving a prescription, customers can enter the drug name on BidRx, including strength, dosage and any other directions into their personal account on the site. BidRx then opens an auction and pharmacies around the country are able to bid on the prescription.
From the bids, customers can choose the price and pharmacy that are right for them. After presenting the original prescription to the pharmacy in person, by mail or fax, the order is filled.
