Deerfield, Ill.-based drugstore chain Walgreen Co. announced Wednesday plans to acquire Take Care Health Systems, a convenient-care clinic chain headquartered in Conshohocken, Pa.
Financial terms of the deal were not released, but Walgreens' purchase of the chain further solidifies the super-pharmacys co-identity with TCH. Currently 40 of TCHs 50 clinics are located inside Walgreens stores.
The deal is the most recent in a growing trend to expand convenient-care clinics, which focus on providing affordable, alternative care to customers by limiting treatment to a range of common illnesses and staffing facilities with nurse practitioners who are able to prescribe medications.
According to Walgreens spokesman Michael Polzin, the company plans to expand TCH clinics into a total of 400 Walgreens locations by the end of 2008. The plan includes transitioning 19 clinics currently operating inside Walgreens, but owned by convenient-care providers RediClinic and EasyCare, into TCH-identified clinics.
Under the purchase deal, TCH will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Walgreens, but will maintain its management staff and corporate offices in Pennsylvania. The company will continue to operate existing and new TCH clinics. -- by Shawn Rhea
