My thanks to Andis Robeznieks for his Reporter's Notebook on the National Patient Safety Foundation Congress. He wrote something that lots of people I know have wished to say but remained silent.Sadly we hear the same voices at all of the NPSF meetings making the same old party-line statements that lead us nowhere. I had considered sending in an abstract to speak at this year's meeting but quickly decided it was a waste of time as the same old faces would be on the podium with nothing new to say, and certainly no measurable success to report but plenty of anecdotal stories at how they slew the dragon. My firm spent 27 years developing patient-safety systems even before the term patient safety was recognized in our language. We came up with what has widely been touted as something unique in assuring quality in the care of a pregnant patient. But try to get that accepted in medicine or indeed onto the podium at a patient-safety conference, and you get ignored.
