A former hospital financial officer has been arrested on charges he illegally used hospital credit cards and tried to get money out of administrators, the Franklin Parish, La., sheriffs office said Monday.
Sheriff Steve Pylant said Michael Patrick Brunton, 38, of Winnsboro, La., was released from the Franklin Parish Detention Center on May 4 on $100,000 bond. He had been arrested two days earlier on charges of extortion, felony theft and simple theft.
Leon Belila, chief executive officer of the Franklin Parish Medical Center, said Brunton resigned as chief financial officer April 27 for personal reasons.
Brunton was arrested after an investigation showed he used the hospital's credit card to allegedly buy gifts for nurses at the hospital, some of whom he may have been allegedly having an affair with, Pylant said.
Brunton was on probation in Oklahoma, where he previously lived, for mail and wire fraud, the sheriff said. Belila said the administration did not know about Brunton's criminal history when he was hired in December 2006. -- by the Associated Press
