The University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, named David Callender, a head and neck surgeon, as its new president. Callender, 49, is currently associate vice chancellor and chief executive officer of the University of California, Los Angeles Hospital System. He is also an adjunct professor of surgery at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.
Previously, he was executive vice president and chief operating officer at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston.
Callender will replace John Stobo, also a physician, who announced last year that he would step down in August 2007 after 10 years leading the medical school. Callenders start date will be determined when the board of regents ratifies his selection at its next meeting, scheduled for May 9. Callender takes over at a time when the institution is struggling under mounting financial pressure.
Dr. Callender is a distinguished leader capable of leading UTMB during this special time of transition, Regents Chairman James Huffines said in a news release. -- by Laura B. Benko
