Group purchasing organization Premier, San Diego, has purchased the CareScience healthcare clinical data-mining unit from information technology provider and systems integrator Quovadx for $34.9 million, the GPO has announced. In addition, Quovadx, a Greenwood Village, Colo.-based information technology provider, has entered into an agreement to be purchased by venture capital firm, Battery Ventures, Waltham, Mass., for $136.7 million, or $3.15 a share of outstanding stock, Quovadx has announced.
The Philadelphia-based CareScience was founded in 1993 by David Brailer, the former head of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. CareScience went public in 2000 and was subsequently purchased by Quovadx in 2003. Brailer left the company later that year and became head of ONCHIT in 2004.
