In response to Todd Sloane's commentary, which appeared in HITS on March 9: As one who has been engaged with the privacy and security project funded by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality through RTI International, and as a participant in the March 5-6 national meeting in Bethesda, Md., I would have to disagree that the energy to debate, learn and develop policies and practices to address this significant barrier to better quality through appropriate electronic health information sharing is missing. We have a ways to go, but to ignore and support the efforts under way is doing a disservice to those dedicated organizations and individuals who do care about individual privacy rights and who have rolled up their sleeves to make a difference in this regard. We need the media's continued involvement and reporting of all aspects of the debate, so please continue to cover this important topic in a balanced way.
