The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology at HHS will announce later this week a contract extension and expansion of federal efforts to promote statewide programs for the development of regional health information organizations, according to sources at the opening of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society conference this week in New Orleans.
The Foundation of Research and Education, the research arm of the American Health Information Management Association, a Chicago-based not-for-profit organization representing 50,000 medical records professionals, started working last spring under HHS contract to examine best practices of state RHIOs.
The AHIMA contract will be extended, with HIMSS and the not-for-profit e-Health Initiative joining the effort.
The official announcement is expected Wednesday, according to sources. Financial terms of the contract were not immediately available.
