California State Sen. Gilbert Cedillo (D-Los Angeles) this week authored a bill introduced in the state Senate that would prohibit hospitals or a hospitals staff members from transporting patients to locations other than their residence without informed consent.
The bill is designed to make dumping homeless hospital patients a specific crime. Violating provisions in the bill would be punishable as a misdemeanor, Cedillos office said in a news release.
We hope the legislative proposal causes an immediate review and adjustment of patient discharge practices, Cedillo said in the release. Leadership must be held responsible. The bill is scheduled to be assigned by the Senate Rules Committee to the appropriate policy committee for review. -- by Jessica Zigmond
