The Catholic Health Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the March of Dimes and 52 other national organizations sent a letter to members of Congress that states how they should reauthorize the State Childrens Health Insurance Program.
Together, the groups call for $60 billion in new SCHIP and Medicaid funding over five years, which it says would be enough to ensure coverage for those already in the program and to expand it out to new enrollees.
The organizations also want Congress to give states new options to expand coverage to pregnant women as well as legal immigrant children who have not been in the country for five years. The White House has proposed an extra $5 billion in new funding attached to provisions that more narrowly define who can and who cannot be covered under the program. -- by Matthew DoBias
