David Leach, M.D., longtime executive director of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, Chicago, will retire in September 2007, the association said. Leach, 62, was named to the post in 1996 and led the organization through a period of dramatic change, including controversial new guidelines issued in July 2003 that generally limited residents’ work schedules to 80 hours a week. The association oversees more than 8,100 accredited programs training more than 103,000 doctors. An internist and endocrinologist, Leach formerly was director of medical education at Henry Ford Health System, Detroit. He plans to retire to Asheville, N.C. A spokeswoman for the association said plans for a search for Leach’s successor haven’t been made yet.
