The manner of death of four patients who died at Memorial Medical Center, New Orleans, after Hurricane Katrina remains under investigation, according to an assistant district attorney in the Orleans Parish district attorneys office. In July 2006, physician Anna Pou and nurses Cheri Landry and Lori Budo were arrested on four counts each of second-degree murder related to the deaths in LifeCare Hospitals long-term care unit at Memorial. The women have not been indicted.
District Attorney Eddie Jordans office expects to present evidence in the case to a special grand jury in early March, said Assistant District Attorney Michael Morales. Its going as fast as possible, Morales said of the process. The file is over 50,000 pages -- its a massive case, and everyone is going as fast as they possibly can. The chief investigator for the Orleans Parish coroners office said he was not at liberty to discuss the deaths or investigation. At deadline, attorneys for Pou, Budo and Landry were not available for comment. -- by Jessica Zigmond
