Florida Gov. Charlie Crist named Andrew Agwunobi, M.D., senior vice president and COO at St. Joseph Health System, Orange, Calif., to head the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, which oversees the state Medicaid program. Agwunobi, 41, stepped down from St. Joseph on Dec. 31. Agwunobi, named one of Modern Healthcare’s "Up and Comers" in 2002, joined St. Joseph last year after working as president and CEO for Grady Health System, Atlanta. He also resigned as a director at for-profit WellCare Health Plans, Tampa, Fla., a position he has held for six months. WellCare operates Medicare and Medicaid managed-care plans with 2.2 million members in eight states, including Florida.
