New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer nominated Richard Daines, president and chief executive officer of St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York, as commissioner of the state department of health. Daines, 56, an internist by training, was previously senior vice president professional affairs and medical director at St. Lukes, and also served in various clinical and administrative positions at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx. Daines received his B.A. from Utah State University and his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College. He will earn a salary of $136,000. -- by Cinda Becker
