Two community hospitals in southwestern Virginia announced an agreement for their facilities to join not-for-profit Mountain States Health Alliance of Johnson City, Tenn. The agreement involves 60-bed Norton (Va.) Community Hospital and Dickenson Community Hospital, a 15-bed facility in Clintwood that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Norton. The merger will expand resources to the communities we serve, and well also have more access to specialty care, said Pam Collie, public relations and marketing coordinator for Norton.
Under the agreement between Nortons board of directors and Mountain States, each group will have equal ownership in the hospitals, with Mountain States furnishing management services. The hospital staffs will continue to be employed by the hospitals. Freddie Mullins, legal counsel for the Virginia hospitals, said he expects the agreement will be finalized in the next six months, after it is submitted to the Virginia attorney general for review. The 11-member Mountain States alliance is the largest healthcare organization in the northern Tennessee/southwest Virginia region. This latest agreement would bring the organization to 13 facilities. -- by Jennifer Lubell
