Arkansas Attorney General-elect Dustin McDaniel is developing proposals for the legislative session that include providing healthcare information for consumers.
McDaniel's legislative proposals include the creation of a state healthcare bureau. Funding for the bureau was included in a budget request McDaniel presented to the Legislative Council and Joint Budget Committee. He asked for two new positions to staff the bureau.
"You've got various sources in state government now that have some responsibilities for assisting healthcare consumers, but there's not a focused, one-stop shopping opportunity for healthcare consumers, and frankly I'd like to simplify the process," he says.
He told of a friend who recently was diagnosed with cancer and had a question about insurance coverage by an out-of-state provider not in his health insurance network.
''That would be the exact type of issue that I would want the healthcare bureau to provide assistance to people on,'' he says.
