SANTA FE, N.M.St. Vincent Regional Medical Center began construction in early December on a $12 million project to expand the 190-bed not-for-profit community hospitals emergency department by more than 20,000 square feet. Expected to open in early 2008, the department will be about 35,000 square feet and will add 40 treatment spaces and 40 additional patient rooms, said Arturo Delgado, a spokesman for the hospital. It will also include a separate pediatric unit with waiting areas and patient rooms; integrated electronic medical records and technology to improve communication among emergency department services, primary-care physicians and specialists; and areas dedicated to family counseling and grieving. The medical center will fund the project with support from the St. Vincent Hospital Foundation, the state Legislature and through debt.
