Third-quarter earnings reports from the largest for-profit hospital chains will come in a flurry. HCA and Health Management Associates led the way earlier this month, both reporting higher bad-dept expense and lower earnings. Next up is Community Health Systems, which will release its third-quarter earnings after the market closes Oct. 25, followed by LifePoint Hospitals and Universal Health Services Oct. 26. Triad will issue its third-quarter results Oct. 30. Earlier this month, the company warned investors that higher bad-debt expense will drag its earnings well below expectations. Two major for-profit hospital chains -- Tenet Healthcare Corp. and Iasis Healthcare Corp. -- have yet to schedule earnings releases.
