Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said he will seek a six-month extension for a Medicare wage-index provision to prevent about 120 hospitals from losing up to $150 million in Medicare funding in fiscal 2007. The provision, created by the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 and set to expire in March 2007, allows the hospitals to apply for reclassification to different wage-index areas. Grassley said he will seek a long-term solution to the problem of adequate Medicare compensation for geographic differences in wage levels. -- by Joseph Mantone
