Texas Childrens Hospital, Houston, announced what it called the largest expansion ever by a single childrens hospital -- a $1.5 billion initiative targeted for completion by 2010. The plan includes $575 million for a new 141-bed maternity center; $220 million for a new 96-bed childrens hospital; $215 million for a new neurological research institute; $120 million to expand existing research facilities; and about $370 million for equipment and information technology. Funding will come from a variety of sources, including the 465-bed hospitals endowment, tax-exempt bonds and fundraising, officials said.
