The CMS is seeking public comment on its proposal to data-mine Medicare Part D claims for research and quality initiatives. The claims data would be linked to patient Medicare information on hospitalizations and physician visits, a news release said, and would be available to researchers and federal agencies with the appropriate privacy and security protections in place.
The public is invited to comment on the most effective use of the data and if the CMS should consider additional regulatory limits for external researchers in order to further guard against the potential misuse of data for commercial purposes, the news release said.
Under the proposed rule, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and academic researchers would have access to the data. Comments will be accepted until Dec. 18.
