Not a day goes by that I don't marvel at the innovation, energy and spirit of the healthcare business. When I first met then-Publisher Charles S. Lauer in the spring of 2001 to discuss employment opportunities at Modern Healthcare, he expressed what I would come to understand, appreciate and celebrate. "Healthcare is America's most exciting and challenging industry," Chuck said. "And the heart of healthcare rests in its people: employees, professionals, patients and families."
In my five years with Modern Healthcare, I've come to understand how the magazine echoes those themes. Bolstered by the creativity, long-term support and commitment of Detroit-based Crain Communications, Modern Healthcare operates through a culture based on character, commitment and high standards of journalism. At a time when some forms of journalism are overrun by speculation and fabrication and others succumb to pressures from advertisers on editorial independence, Modern Healthcare remains committed to its philosophy of fair, balanced, objective reporting. No matter how our industry evolves, Modern Healthcare will be there to research, report and illuminate.
Healthcare is indeed America's most exciting industry, and it has an exciting short- and long-term future. While healthcare is blessed by breakthroughs, it still faces significant challenges. The good news: We have the power to change our circumstances and direction.
As we celebrate our 30th anniversary, special thanks go out to Keith and Rance Crain for their vision and commitment to the magazine, and to Gloria Scoby and David Blake of Crain Communications for their leadership and support. Special thanks to Chuck Lauer for his leadership, hard work, dedication and commitment to transforming Modern Healthcare from a low-profile publication to a must-read for the industry. On a personal level, I am grateful to Chuck for his friendship, support, wisdom and mentoring. Thanks also to Modern Healthcare's team of publishing pros: David Burda, Ilana Klein, Brenda Stewart, Megan Martin, Lisa Keener, Nicole Dionne and every member of our staff, both present and former.
And thank you to Modern Healthcare's vendors, readers and advertisers. Throughout the years, you've given us your support, loyalty and trust. Without you, we couldn't have accomplished our mission over the past 30 years.
