A grand jury investigation into four patient deaths in a long-term-care unit at 603-bed Memorial Medical Center, New Orleans, will not begin for at least one month, officials said. The Orleans Parish district attorney's office said it is waiting for findings from the coroner, including the autopsy protocol, classification of deaths and toxicology reports. The grand jury will determine if the district attorney should charge a physician and two nurses at Memorial who were arrested last month on suspicion of second-degree murder in connection with the patients' deaths during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina last summer. The caregivers were released on bond. -- by Jessica Zigmond
