Three-hospital MultiCare Health System, Tacoma, Wash., agreed to acquire 201-bed Good Samaritan Community Healthcare in nearby Puyallup, Wash., for undisclosed terms. The state health department must approve the deal. Good Samaritan began searching for a merger or acquisition partner in late 2005 because of weak finances, an aging facility and strong population growth. The not-for-profit hospital entered into exclusive talks with MultiCare, also a not-for-profit, in April. Under the deal, Good Samaritan would keep its name and a local governing board. -- by Melanie Evans
