Kevin Lofton has resigned as chairman of the board of Centura Health, Englewood, Colo., to be replaced by Michael Fordyce, chief administrative officer at 56-hospital Catholic Health Initiatives, Denver. Lofton is the chairman-elect of the American Hospital Association board and remains president and CEO of CHI. He will serve his term as AHA chairman in 2007. Richard Reiner, president of Adventist Health System's multistate division, was named as Centura's vice chairman. Adventist and CHI jointly sponsor Centura, which manages 12 hospitals. ... Harvey Holzberg, the former president and CEO of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J., was named consulting director to run all operations of the struggling St. Mary Hospital in Hoboken, N.J. The appointment comes as the hospital's parent company, Bon Secours Health System, continues negotiations to transfer ownership of the facility to the city of Hoboken. If transferred, St. Mary's would become eligible for increased federal funding, officials say. Holzberg, 68, and a new team of financial managers replace Cambio Health Solutions, a hospital operations firm that had provided management services to St. Mary since August 2004. ... Bradford Berk has been promoted to senior vice president for health sciences and CEO of the University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center and its patient-care network, Strong Health. Berk, 53, succeeds C. McCollister Evarts, who announced in January he was stepping down after his contract ended on June 30. He will stay on as a distinguished university professor. A nationally known researcher into cellular mechanisms that cause cardiovascular disease, Berk received medical and doctoral degrees from the University of Rochester before taking academic appointments at Harvard Medical School and other institutions. He returned in 1998 to Rochester, most recently serving as chairman of medicine. ... Kenneth Graham has been named CEO of El Camino Hospital, Mountain View, Calif., replacing Lee Domanico, who in January became head of five-hospital Legacy Health System, Portland, Ore. Graham, 58, had been president and CEO of Overlake Hospital Medical Center, Bellevue, Wash. Overlake named Craig Hendrickson, its COO, to serve as interim CEO. ... David Nevill is resigning as president and CEO of Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kan., to become the president of business development for Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, India. Apollo operates 38 hospitals in several countries and also runs pharmacies and other healthcare services. Nevill, 45, joined HCA-owned Wesley in 1998 as COO and moved into the top job in 2001. Nevill says the new job offers challenges that are "exciting and a little bit scary" and provides his wife and daughters the chance to spend more time with his wife's side of the family, most of whom live in India. Nevill is being replaced at Wesley by Hugh Tappan, 37, the former COO of Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center in Denver. ... Tenet Healthcare Corp., Dallas, named Ana Mederos as CEO of Palmetto General Hospital, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Mederos, 50, has served as CEO of two other Tenet hospitals in South Florida, Hialeah (Fla.) Hospital and North Shore Medical Center, Miami.
