Electronic Data Systems of Plano, Texas, was awarded a contract that could total up to $41 million for providing Web-hosting services to support publicly accessible CMS Web content. This is the second task order issued to EDS under the CMS' $1.9 billion project to consolidate its 17 data-center operations.
EDS will also support other CMS Web-based legacy applications, plus disaster-recovery and testing operations for those applications. Additionally, EDS will provide workload-transition support and daily production management services on equipment dedicated to the CMS.
The first task order EDS received was awarded in April and is worth up to $29 million. Under its terms, EDS is establishing the first operational Enterprise Data Center to process fee-for-service Medicare claims.
Along with EDS, the other vendors involved in the project are IBM, Armonk, N.Y., and Companion Data Services of Columbia, S.C. CDS is a fully owned subsidiary of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of South Carolina created specifically for this project. In March, these three companies were awarded exclusive rights to bid on task orders for the project, which is being called the CMS IT Modernization Initiative.
As a part of the contract, EDS Agility Alliance partners Cisco Systems, EMC Corp., Sun Microsystems and Dell will provide key components, an EDS news release said.
