TMC HealthCare, Tucson, Ariz., said it plans to convert its 90-bed El Dorado Hospital in Tucson into a nursing home or other elder-care facility as part of a $400 million consolidation and rebuilding plan. Patients at El Dorado will be transferred to TMC's nearby Tucson Medical Center, which now staffs only 450 of its 600 licensed beds. Not-for-profit TMC, which acquired El Dorado for $32 million in 2003, also plans to open a new 100-bed community hospital in Tucson, to be called Rincon Community Hospital at Civano, within about two years. It will also replace the 60-year-old Tucson Medical Center with a new seven-story hospital tower and other buildings by 2012. -- by Laura B. Benko
