There are several small software companies in our state that have a strong local presence and provide both practice management and electronic medical-record solutions at reasonable prices. These companies are not in a position to pay large fees for certification and additional fees for use of the "certification" logos on their marketing materials. Large vendors -- such as GE, A4, Misys, NextGen, etc. -- can absorb the additional costs because they have a national presence and a large number of installs. This essentially means that the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology could very well drive some of the smaller, more regional competitors out of business since they will be unable to afford to certify their product.
