The American Hospital Association said its president, Richard Davidson, 69, will retire Jan. 1, 2007, and named its current board chairman, Richard Umbdenstock, 56, to succeed Davidson. Umbdenstock will serve as president-elect and chief operating officer of the AHA beginning in June and become president Jan. 1, 2007. Umbdenstock resigned from the AHA board effective immediately and will step down in June from his position as executive vice president for advocacy, governance and external affairs at Providence Health & Services, Seattle, AHA spokeswoman Alicia Mitchell said. George Lynn, president and CEO of AtlantiCare Health System, Egg Harbor Township, N.J., and immediate past-chairman of the AHA board, will step in as AHA chairman until January.
