LifePoint Hospitals, Brentwood, Tenn., and HCA, Nashville, said they are renegotiating their deal for LifePoint to buy five HCA hospitals. The deal was scheduled to close last week at a reported purchase price of $330 million, but LifePoint has been under pressure not to complete the acquisition, both because the hospitals involved have posted deteriorating financial results and because LifePoint's own results were disappointing for the fourth quarter. Last week Accipiter Capital Management, which owns about 1.6% of LifePoint's shares, called on the company to scuttle the deal and focus on fixing problems at the facilities it already owns. -- by Vince Galloro
