United Surgical Partners International, Dallas, will purchase competitor Surgis, Nashville, the two companies announced. The deal is expected to close in March or April. Fast-growing USPI, which acquired nine surgical centers in the St. Louis area earlier this month, operates or has ownership interests in 101 surgical facilities in the U.S., including 68 jointly owned by not-for-profit healthcare systems. Most of those facilities are now in competition with free-standing facilities under the Surgis banner. Surgis, which had $118 million in revenue in 2005, operates 24 surgery centers and has an additional seven facilities under development. Surgis also manages endoscopy services in 42 acute-care hospitals. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. -- by Michael Romano
