Allscripts, Chicago, announced a $272 million deal to acquire privately held A4 Health Systems, Cary, N.C., and said it has renegotiated an earlier marketing agreement with IDX, recently acquired by GE, to increase the flexibility of its product offerings. The Allscripts board approved the purchase of A4; shareholder and regulatory approval still must be obtained. Both companies make electronic medical records systems for physicians, but A4 targets smaller practices. The deal is expected to close in the first half of the year. Allscripts will pay $215 million in cash and 3.5 million shares of stock for the company. -- by Joseph Conn
