Roger Williams Medical Center, Providence, R.I., said the boards of trustees for the hospital and its parent company terminated Robert Urciuoli as president and chief executive officer. Urciuoli had been on paid administrative leave for the past month in the midst of a criminal investigation. Urciuoli, two former executives and the 151-bed hospital pleaded not guilty last week to fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from alleged bribes to a former state lawmaker. In a statement, attorneys for Urciuoli said the hospital fired Urciuoli in hopes of reaching a deal with the government on the indictment. Over the weekend, Urciuoli and the two other members of the hospital board voted to replace Urciuoli on the hospital board with Kenneth Belcher, interim president and CEO. -- by Joseph Mantone
