Roger Williams Medical Center, Providence, R.I., said its board named a new board member to replace indicted president and chief executive officer, Robert Urciuoli, who has been on paid administrative leave for the past month in the midst of a criminal investigation. The vote by the three-member board, including Urciuoli, was unanimous. He was replaced by interim President and CEO Kenneth Belcher. Urciuoli, two former executives and the 151-bed hospital pleaded not guilty last week to fraud and conspiracy charges stemming from alleged bribes to a former state lawmaker. The board meeting was the first since Urciuoli's term on the board expired in December. A lawyer for Urciuoli said Urciuoli voted to replace himself on the board because he was no longer involved in the hospital's day-to-day operations. -- by Joseph Mantone
