Charity Hospital, New Orleans, is expected to provide emergency care at Elmwood Medical Center, Jefferson, La., beginning Feb. 1 and other medical services at St. Charles Specialty Hospital, New Orleans, in April, a spokesman said. All the hospitals are operated by the LSU Health Care Services Division. Charity and its sister institution, University Hospital, were damaged by flooding after Hurricane Katrina in September and in the months since have remained empty, laying off some 3,500 employees. It will cost an estimated $890 million to repair Charity and $390 million to repair University, spokesman Marvin McGraw said. LSU is "moving forward" to rebuild the hospitals but is still in negotiations with the Federal Emergency Management Agency to be reimbursed, McGraw said. -- by Jessica Zigmond
