An official advisory panel to HHS has urged the federal organization to quickly update the e-prescribing standards that take affect Jan. 1, 2006.
The National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics said it wants HHS to allow physicians to use the newer Script Standard Implementation Guide, Version 8.1, rather than the Script 5.0. The latest version, Script 8.1, has been used by the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs since October 2005, when it first was published. In a recent letter to HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt, NCVHS Chair Simon Cohn wrote that the Script 8.1 is more functional than Script 5.0, while it keeps most of the compatibility with the older product.
The Script standards for sending prescriptions to pharmacies have been developed by the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs.
