Kindred Healthcare, Louisville, Ky., signed a definitive agreement to buy four long-term acute-care hospitals in Massachusetts from Health Care REIT, Toledo, Ohio, for about $80 million. Kindred announced a tentative agreement with the real estate investment trust in October in connection with a $125 million asset acquisition from Commonwealth Communities Holdings. Commonwealth currently operates the hospitals. Kindred said it expects to close the deal in the first quarter, subject to several conditions, including completion of the Commonwealth acquisition and federal antitrust clearance. -- by Jessica Zigmond
