TUV Healthcare Specialists, Cincinnati, said it received CMS notification that its application to offer accreditation services to hospitals was complete. If the application is approved, the arm of TUV America would become the third private organization with authority to accredit U.S. hospitals for Medicare participation, competing with the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and the American Osteopathic Association. TUV America certifies companies in the use of ISO 9000 management and quality-improvement techniques. Notice of TUV Healthcare's application is scheduled to be published in the Jan. 27 Federal Register, launching a 30-day comment period, said Darrel Scott, its senior vice president for regulatory and legal affairs. The CMS has until June 30 to rule on the application. -- by Joseph Conn
