Norton Healthcare, Louisville, Ky., applied for a state certificate of need to build a $146 million hospital in a fast-growing area of northeast Jefferson County to replace a hospital about 15 miles away in the southwest part of the city. Officials said the replacement for 121-bed Norton Southwest would be the first new full-service hospital built in the area in more than 25 year. The first phase of the project, an 80-bed facility, would break ground in February 2007 and open in July 2008. The second phase would include an additional 47 beds, with construction beginning in 2009 and ending in 2011. -- by Michael Romano
