Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center furloughed about 460 people, including 139 doctors from a medical staff of about 750. Acting Chancellor Larry Hollier said Hurricane Katrina put seven of the system's 10 hospitals out of operation; five hospitals, located in New Orleans, "are out for the long term." The system has lost $100 million in revenue as a result of the hurricane, Hollier said. He said he did not expect "another wave" of furloughs in the near future provided the system receives interim funding. "I anticipate we will get some support for this because of the needs the state has," Hollier said. "The real tragedy is that many of these people worked so hard and lost their homes, and now this."
