Aurora Health Care, Milwaukee, hired 48 doctors and nurse midwives, effective July 2006, whose employment contracts weren't renewed by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
Eighteen other providers in the UW group did not accept Aurora's offer. The 12-hospital system formed a joint venture with the university, Aurora UW Academic Physician Group Practice, to employ the providers, who will remain clinical faculty at the university in internal medicine, family practice and obstetrics and gynecology.
The university notified the faculty last year that it would not renew their contracts. Aurora subsequently offered to hire them.
In a news release, Aurora said its UW residency programs would not reduce enrollment and the joint venture would immediately begin recruiting replacements for the 18 providers who rejected the offer.
