The former chief executive officer at American Healthcare Management, St. Louis, which once operated nursing homes, was charged with one count of conspiracy and five counts of healthcare fraud in connection with failures of care and abuse of residents at three Missouri nursing homes.
At deadline, the former CEO, Robert Wachter, had not entered a plea, and neither Wachter nor an attorney representing him could be located for comment.
Wachter led American Healthcare from January 1998 to June 2001.
A lawyer for the company said it no longer operates nursing homes. The company agreed in October to pay $1.25 million to settle allegations of poor care at the homes.
